ODESSA, TX (Big 2/ Fox 24) – ECISD will now weigh high school student’s grade point average. The Pre-Advanced Placement and IB courses will now move up to a tier-three scale, going from a 4.5 to a 5.0 grading scale.
ECISD students will be able to remain in their electives without having a negative effect on their GPA.
“At that grade level at that time, that is the most rigorous course they can take,” says Nancy Vanley, Executive director of guidance & counseling of ECISD. “So we feel like they deserve to be up to the higher tier to make more of a differentiation between the general course and Pre-AP course.”
So what does this all mean for ECISD’s high schoolers?
“They’re going to have some general courses as well because some of the Pre-AP and IB don’t start until later,” she says. “They will have both General AP or Pre-AP on their transcripts.”
Vanley says students may not score as high of a grade on their report card in the AP or IB courses. However, these courses are more rigorous, and they will now weigh more heavily than the general ed courses.
“We feel like it benefits the students with this change; it gives them more of a benefit to take a Pre-AP course or Pre-IB than it did,” Vanley says. “Now, there’s a little bit more difference between the general ed and this one, so we want to give them a chance to try them.”
