Digital Exclusive: School zone safety

Local News

(YourBasin) – Schools back in session whether students are learning online or in a classroom setting.

As some of those students head back to the classroom the Odessa Police Department is reminding everyone to be cautious in school zones.

“We just like to remind the public to please slow down when they approach school zones,” said Cpl. Steve LeSueur.

LeSueur states that drivers must adhere to the posted speed limit during designated hours or when the lights are flashing.

He also states that some people might not understand the law when stopping for school buses. Do not pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload kids.

Traffic in both directions on undivided highways must stop when students are entering or exiting the bus. Though on a divided highway, all traffic behind the school bus must stop.

“Just always assume that there’s a child walking in front of a school bus,” said LeSueur.

About 10 feet around the bus is where the students are in the most danger of being in an accident.

“We’ve seen way to many crashes within the last few years involving children, who have been either seriously hurt or killed as a result of someone speeding through a school zone,” said LeSueur.
