Coronavirus turns caregivers into teachers

Local News

ODESSA, TX (Big 2/ fox 24) – The coronavirus has turned children’s caregivers into homeschoolers. Many schools across the country and even here in Midland and Odessa have students doing schoolwork at home.

Parents are dealing with major changes since now they have to bring their student’s classroom into their household.

One Odessa mother is bringing the classroom to her living room for her child to feel as if she’s in her classroom.

“I feel like this is the perfect time to unwind, really relax, and my focus one on teaching my daughter,” Paige Hackett, parent of a student at Milam Magnet Elementary School. “That’s something that’s missing in every school. these teachers do their best and do the most that they can with every student but each child does need this one on  one.”

While her student is transitioning to learn at home, Paige Hackett says there are a lot of resources for students to do at home.

“There are zoos that are doing online like you’re at the virtual zoo tours there’s museums online there’s so much out there.”

Although we are at a time that everyone has to adapt to new changes for the safety of the community, others say it’s the best time to be closer with their kids.

“It’s very concerning on what’s going on,” says Laura Chavez, parent of a student at Milam Magnet Elementary School. “I know a lot of parents don’t have the same blessing that I do. I get to stay home with my kids, but I know that we’re going to prepare for the best. I know we’ve gotten some messages from teachers of work that the kids can do here at home. some youtube videos that they can watch here, you know it’s just going to be playing by ear.”

With all of the news, everyone is receiving about the coronavirus, many say this is also a time to slow down and come together as a community.

“It’s definitely a time for us to come together as a community,” Chavez says. ” I know there’s a lot of desperation and frustration; some parents are upset, but if we can come together and help one another, I think that’s going to be the best solution for us.”

There are many educational resources parents can find for their children. You can find a variety of those resources below:
