MIDLAND, Texas (BIG2/FOX24) – Buckner Midland hosted its 7th annual Christmas party for foster, and single-parent, families in their programs.
Executive Director, Patricia Acosta, says Friday night’s event is a yearly reminder that the West Texas community cares.
“One of my favorite parts is, when we do the gifts, seeing the kids’ faces,” said Acosta. “Our program has single moms, and sometimes that can be really stressful for them. Also, for our foster parents who often times have four, five, six foster children. And so, this event is really important because we want to support them, and it’s really just a time during something stressful to bring holiday cheer.”
‘Tis the season for the gift of hope and the warmth of company. Bucker Midland brought more than 180 children and parents together for the holiday season. Founded back in 1879, Buckner International is a faith-based, non-profit organization that serves to transform the lives of vulnerable children, families, and seniors.
“Approximately 7,000 children in the state of Texas needs a home. Specifically in Midland, 195. We desperately need foster parents. We get calls everyday,” explained Acosta.
Among the crowd of smiling faces was the Adair family. Father, Steven, says their foster children have always been a blessing.
“It’s different with every child, but it’s exciting every time,” said Adair. “You make it work, and you just love them through the hard times. And praise them, as they grow with your family and the accomplishments that they experience, while they’re with you.”
Midland programs include Foster Care and Adoption, Family Transition Programs, and humanitarian aid, as well as, crisis relief to poverty-stricken families.
“It has been a wonderful experience for me and my son,” said single-mother, Alexis McNeese. “This is our first time living by ourselves. It just makes it so much more easier in that you have people there to support you and get you through the tough times.”
