BIG BEND, Texas (Big 2/Fox 24) – Big Bend National Park has announced plans for a phased reopening.
Officials say, if they receive the green light from local, state, and federal agencies, the Park could begin opening some areas for day use on June 1.
Select trails for day hiking, Rio Grande float trips, the Chisos Mountains Lodge restaurant, the Fossil Discovery exhibit, and more are being considered for the phased reopening.
“Big Bend National Park is 100 miles from the nearest hospital, and while the park community has fortunately been disease-free, the public health consultants we are working with remain concerned about the vulnerability of employees, residents, and visitors should anyone become symptomatic with COVIUD-19 while in the park,” Superintendent Bob Krumenaker said in a statement.
