MIDLAND, TX (Big 2/Fox 24)- The month of April is dedicated to bringing awareness to child abuse, and The Centers for Children and Families is just one of the organizations raising awareness.
Data released in March by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services shows an increase in child abuse and neglect deaths in 2020, a jump from the previous two years. 251 Texas children died of abuse or neglect and that statistic was 235 in 2019 and 211 in 2018.
Kristi Edwards says that you can be part of the solution simply by looking for the signs of child abuse. Those signs can include a change in behavior, aggression, depression, anxiety among other things. One thing for teachers to look out for is continued absence from school.
They say to remember the motto, “see something, say something”. You can also raise awareness by wearing blue this Friday, having pinwheels in your yard or neighborhood and posting on social media. Volunteering opportunities are available through Centers for Children and Families as well through their Centers Kids First Program.
