ODESSA, Texas (Nexstar)- Mugs for Mutts and Cups for Cats- it’s a great name with an even greater purpose.
The Odessa College Ceramics Department is working to help stray animals in the Basin by creating ceramic mugs and cups to sell at a fundraising event.
“The plan is is to get the artistic community behind the new animal shelter,” said Chris Stanley, UTPB Associate Professor of Art.
The Odessa City Council recently approved the building of a new animal shelter facility to the tune of 8.3 million dollars. The more than 20 thousand square feet structure will be built just east of the current one.
The new, larger facility, will allow shelter animals a longer stay and a better shot at adoption.
“The plan is, that in some point in the future we’re gonna have a party and we’re gonna raise money by selling these cups to provide resources to the new animal shelter,” Stanley said.
No date has been set for the fundraiser yet, but the idea behind the event is similar to that of the Empty Bowls fundraiser held each year to raise money for the West Texas Food Bank. At the Empty Bowl fundraiser, supporters buy locally made ceramic bowls full of soup.
