ODESSA, Texas (Big 2/Fox 24) – The Junior Leadership Odessa Retreat was held in the Odessa Regional Medical Center Auditorium. Kids involved in the program participated in team building activities and even had a guest speaker. the program is a great way to show students the opportunities available to them in the community.

“It’s a wonderful experience. I mean, for the longest time we’ve only seen the people we’ve seen at school but even then we don’t know all the people at our school. So, it’s nice to get to know people from other cultures, backgrounds, and other schools. It’s just a wonderful experience,” says Isaac Camacho, a JLO participant.

Camacho says it’s a chance to grow in many ways.

“I want to grow up to be a person who understands the other person, and you know, know how to communicate and to be self sufficient. I want to be able to pull my own weight and you know be responsible,” says Camacho.

Program volunteer Aaron Thomas says the curriculum is much more than meets the eye. Kids are shaping up for the future of their community along the way.

“They’re already the future of Odessa. They’re the ones who are eventually going to be making the moves and making things happen in Odessa. Giving them all the opportunity, giving all the information beforehand,” says Aaron Thomas, JLO volunteer.

Thomas hopes this opportunity gives the students the chnace to network and connect with others.

“There’s more to do in Odessa than what everyone is always talking about. You always hear people say there’s nothing to do in Odessa. I really feel like that people don’t know what’s really going on in Odessa. This will just show them there’s just more than what has been told to them that they can do an accomplish,” says Thomas

Junior Leadership Odessa is a nine-month program that is overseen by the Odessa Chamber of Commerce. Throughout the nine-months they will visit businesses and industry up close. This allows them to network with peers and industry professionals.
