HOBBS, New Mexico (Nexstar)- The Hobbs Police Department have arrested Adrian McGaha for murder following a weekend homicide investigation.

According to a release, around 1:30 a.m. April 24, police responded to Rex Arms Apartments in the 100 block of E Corbett after reports of shots fired in the area.

Once on scene, multiple apartments were checked, but officers were unable to locate evidence a shooting had occurred.

Around 2:00 p.m., police responded again to the same location for a welfare check.

There, officers received additional information from the manager of the apartments concerning the possible shooting.

Officers received information about a specific apartment number and found Maurice Benton dead inside an apartment. Police say Benton sustained “multiple gunshot wounds”.

Witnesses told police that Benton and McGaha were arguing and that McGaha left for a while and then returned and opened fire.

McGaha was taken to the Hobbs Police Department where he was arrested and charged with murder.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information regarding the shooting is encouraged to contact Hobbs Police Department at 575-937-9265 or Lea County Crime Stoppers at 575-393-8005.
