Grandfalls community rallies to support football coach

Grandfalls-Royalty ISD hosted a fundraiser today to raise money for head football coach Joe Helms.

Helms was diagnosed with cancer earlier this spring, and the community decided to raise money to help support his treatment costs.

The group served enchilada plates at the school’s cafeteria Friday, and raised more than $8,000 for Helms.

“He’s, of course, the backbone of our school, and so we’re going to do whatever we need to do,” said school counselor Toy Eaton.

“In this town we’re more like a family. You know we’re all in it as one. And we like to help out anyway we can,” said fundraiser cook Rosie Martinez.

Helms said treatment is going well, and he is very appreciate of all the support.
