Gov. signs bill to increase penalties for assaults on pregnant women

News

AUSTIN, Texas (Big 2/Fox 24) The bill, authored by State Rep. Brooks Landgraf, that would increase the penalty for assault on pregnant women has been signed by Governor Greg Abbott.

House Bill 902 will make it a third degree felony for assaulting a pregnant woman if the suspect knew or should have known the woman was pregnant at the time of the assault.

Currently, assaulting a pregnant woman is a class A misdemeanor.

Gov. Abbott signed the bill on Monday.

“Very pleased to announce that yesterday Governor Greg Abbott signed into law my bill (HB 902) to increase the penalty for the crime of assaulting a pregnant woman,” Landgraf said via social media Tuesday morning. In my view, the new law reflects the facts that this heinous act is a crime against both the mother *and* her unborn child. I appreciate the Governor for signing this pro-life bill that helps protect women from violence.

The law will go into effect Sept. 1, 2019.
