ODESSA, Texas, (ABC Big 2 / FOX 24) – The worst of the winter weather may be behind us. But as thousands in the Basin lost power, some may want to prevent that from happening again.
Having a generator can save you a lot of trouble the next time the power goes out.
“You can pick up a little portable unit to do lights, you can pick up a unit like your kitchen to keep you warm, to keep the stove going, keep the refrigerator going, keep a couple lights on,” said Dan Nicholas, Owner of Permian Basin Solar Energy Solutions.
Nicholas specializes in installing generators in homes, he said people who do get one should also be careful when they are installing it.
“There’s a lot of issues that can happen,” Nicholas said. “If you aren’t fully understanding how the electricity works, you can actually create a lot of problems by miss wiring it.”
Generators usually cost between $5,000 to $10,000, depending on the house and how much you want powered. But Nicholas said it’s worth it.
“Another good thing about it is that it’s an asset to the house,” Nicholas said. ” I mean your property value can go up.”
And after experiencing this freeze, Nicholas hopes more people will be ready for the worst of situations.
“If I can help other people learn the lesson and the value on being able to be prepared you can help and serve other people.”
