We are gearing up for our annual Founder’s Day of Caring, hosted by our parent company, Nexstar Media Group.
During Founder’s Day, Nexstar stations across the country head out into their communities to serve others.
We have chosen to team up with Meals on Wheels of Odessa. It will be our third year partnering with Meals on Wheel’s, and we are excited to get out in the community. While we are still relatively new to the meal delivery service, Executive Director Margret Burton is not.
Burton has served with the organization for 23 years and knows firsthand, the impact it has on the community of Odessa.
“In 1977 when we started, we delivered 12 meals that day. Today, we are delivering over 550 meals so it takes lots and lots of volunteers,” said Burton.
Their motto: “So no senior goes hungry.”
“These older people helped to build Odessa. We worked hard for that little bit of money we get now,” said Burton.
Over the years, Burton has seen many changes and has developed new initiatives to serve the elderly community.
Volunteers are always finding new ways to help. Just outside their facility, they set up a blessing box about a month ago. It’s filled with food each day, open 24-hours a day and people can take it with no questions asked.
“No one knows who takes it, and we don’t really care,” said Burton.
Another new way the nonprofit is giving back, it’s now providing its clients with food for their four legged friends.
“We think it’s very important that we help them feed their animals because that’s their companions,” said Burton.
As you can see, Meals on Wheels is adapting with the times and covering as many people as they possibly can.
It is their giving spirit that inspired us to get involved during our Founder’s Day of Caring. We hope that you are inspired as well and will consider lending a hand to Meals on Wheels.
If you’re interested in helping, one hour a week is all it takes to deliver up to 17 meals.
