Face the Race 5K raises funds for girls mentoring program

News

This Saturday, the Junior League of Midland, will be hosting a 5K race to benefit their middle school mentoring program called Face the Race.

This year Face the Race has mentored 59 girls ages 12 to 14 across four MISD schools – Abell, Alamo, Goddard, and San Jacinto. Junior League mentors said this program is vital, and the statistics from a survey of this year’s participants show the need for encouraging mentors.

  • 63% of the girls in the program said they wish they had more self-esteem.
  • 53% of girls didn’t think they had accomplished anything.
  • 45% feel useless at times.
  • Nine were looking for a mentor in their lives.

The 8-week program was created in 2007 to increase self-esteem in teenage girls and promote healthy living. Each session wraps up with Junior League mentors and participants training for the Face the Race 5K together taking place this year on Saturday, November 16th. Before the race, the girls get a full set of fitness gear, including tennis shoes. And they also make tutus in their school color.
