MIDLAND, Texas (Big 2/Fox 24) – One Midland restaurant owner continues to provide food for students as schools remain closed.
Electric Flava Cafe saw the need and made a plan to provide hot meals for all students in the area. With students out of school, Electric Flava Cafe took immediate action to feed them.
“When my daughter called me and told me that school was canceled, we knew we had to do something for these kids,” Meleka McGee, owner of Electric Flava Cafe, said.
McGee said she knows what it’s like to be a single parent struggling to feed kids and depending on the school meals, so she and her volunteers took the initiative to provide food for all. They also did it with the help of donations that came from out of state.
“I really wanted the kids to have something hot and taste something with some love in it,” she said. “That’s all I wanted them to show the kids is that you can eat good food. Good food is there. You know it just takes a little bit of love, and these last two weeks, we’ve stopped at nothing.”
The cafe wants to challenge other businesses to do a good deed and provide food for students.
“Unfortunately today and tomorrow are going to be our last days cooking. We’ve cooked for the past two weeks, so I’m going to challenge another business out there to pick up where we left off. It’s not hard. I mean, we did it, for I mean the donation wise crossing it out is the same price as school lunch and these kids ate good food this week.”
