ODESSA, Texas (Nexstar)- A student has been arrested in connection with a social media threat Monday.
According to a release by Ector County ISD, district police were told about a social media threat directed at two middle schools.
The original message, found on an Instagram account, seemed to threaten Bowie Middle School or Crockett Middle School. ECISD police began investigating immediately.
The student, identified as a 13-year-old boy, admitted to making the posts to try and scare people. That student was taken into custody and is facing criminal charges.
ABC Big 2 News spoke to parents to get their reaction on these threats, they tell us they’re just glad things didn’t take a turn for the worst.
“As a parent, we’re going to take this seriously because you know we have kids in school and we don’t want something like that to happen,” said Johnny Ramirez.
Other parents are glad the student who was responsible for the post was caught.
“You know it’s like a good feeling, not a good feeling because you don’t want any kid to be in trouble that way but that it’s taken care of,” said Martha Estrada.
Daniel Dorethy, a counselor at Bowie Middle Schools, said the staff was prepared for this kind of situation. They want parents to know their kids are in good hands.
“We’re going to take care of their kids just like we would do with our own,” Dorethy said. ” Safety measures were put into place and we were here and available for the students and that’s important.”
ECISD says while this type of post may be intended as a joke or a prank, it will not be treated as a joke, and will carry serious consequences.
