ODESSA, Texas (Big 2/Fox 24) – This week is National School Lunch Week and the Nutrition Department at ECISD is making sure kids don’t skip a beat even if they are learning from home.
Brandon Reyes, the ECISD Director of School Nutrition said, “it’s one less thing for families to worry about. It’s important that the students know that we are going to take care of them whether or not they are in the classroom or at home.”
“Thirty-eight percent of our students are remote learning which puts it at about 12,000 we only have about 268 kids on our roster right now so we are looking to expand that as quickly as possible,” added the Director.
The nutrition department is offering home delivery for kids that opted for online learning but still depend on school lunch. Since the start of the pandemic in March ECISD has been able to deliver nearly one million meals to students.
This is a joint effort between the nutrition department and volunteers who pack and deliver meals. According to ECISD, their mission is to remove any barriers to learning, especially by fighting hunger.
Lynn Van Amburgh, a volunteer and the Odessa Chamber Director of Operations said, “Typically we just leave it at the front door and we take the bags from the week before but typically the parents come out and just thank us profusely.
“It makes me feel good and it takes less than an hour to take our deliveries,” said Van Amburgh.
Those that would like to sign up can do so on the ECISD website. As they expand they are looking to get a bid to partner with Door Dash and other delivery companies.
