MIDLAND, Texas (YourBasin) – With a little over 100 days until the elections in November, Midlander Michael Booker announces his candidacy for MISD Board District 1.
Currently, the seat is occupied by James Fuller. Fuller has held the position since 1988.
The former Marine hopes to bring a ‘new face’ and get parents involved while conquering issues he wants to address.
“I want the parents to know I am here for them,” says Booker. “I’m here for the kids. I want them to know I’m going to try to take their concerns to the board so they can have their voices heard from me to the board.”
The life long Midlander graduated from the district and wants to make sure students have the best education but says facility upgrades are needed.
“The schools still look the same from when I was there. Midland High looks the same. Lee looks the same when I would pass by or walk through to go to games,” says Booker. “Our facilities can be more top-notch than what we have right now.”
After a blunder in last November’s MISD bond election, where more than 800 votes were misplaced, Booker hopes it never happens again.
“To make sure that I have an understanding from a board member’s perspective that all votes must be accounted for before I could raise my hand to approve,” states Booker.
With facility upgrades, better education on the radar for Booker, he says overall, he’s hoping to make a change on the board.
“I just think it’s time for our generation to step up and learn from the seasoned board members and be more involved with the district,” says Booker.
