Digital Exclusive: Day in the life of a custodian

News

ODESSA, Texas (YourBasin) – As some students are heading back to the classrooms, custodians will be taking on more to provide a safe environment for the staff and students.

“Well, it’s a little bit different than it was before,” said Michael Castelo, the head custodian at Bonham Middle School. “We’re taking care of a little bit more. Sanitizing and disinfecting a little bit more than we normally do. We hit the high touch areas more frequently and constantly now than we were before.”

COVID-19 remains in Ector County and school officials are taking all the precautions to keep the virus at bay.

With extra precautions in place, Castelo does not think it will be more stress for his staff.

“We have set sanitary stations in all classrooms with disinfected, and hand sanitizers, and paper towels so it will be available,” said Castelo. “We are going to be constantly, not only us as custodians, but the staff and students will be helping us out.”

ECISD has provided a ‘day in life’ sheet for custodians on their website.

The sheet entails what high touch areas are such as door knobs, light switches, hand rails, etc.

After a custodian self prescreens at home, their day starts at 5 AM to start cleaning and disinfecting rooms and restrooms. According to Castelo, restrooms will be disinfected every hour.

“I believe it’s going to be a safe place to bring your kids,” said Castelo. “We are going to be monitoring [cleaning supplies] and if we run low I’ll reorder right away so we will have some on hand all the time.”
