CNA scholarship established at Howard College

BIG SPRING, Texas (Nexstar)- Howard College has established the Silvia Polanco CNA scholarship to help single moms and dads who are wanting to start their nursing career through the Howard College Certified Nurse Aid program.

The scholarship is named in honor of Polanco, a 1971 Howard College nursing graduate.

Polanco was a nurse for 34 years at the Big Spring State Hospital. After her death, her daughter Josette Mata wanted to honor her mother by establishing the scholarship to help others pursuing their education in her late mother’s field.

“We are always so honored when families set up scholarships to honor their loved ones,” said Dr. Cheryl T. Sparks, Howard College president. “When it is in honor of an alum, it is even more special. We pledge to be good stewards of the donations and ensure that scholarship funds are awarded to deserving students.”

The scholarship will be awarded by Howard College and the online application can be found here

Anyone interested in donating to the scholarship fund can contact Julie Bailey by email or by calling 432-264-5051.
