ODESSA, Texas (Big 2/Fox 24) – If you drive by 42nd street any day of the week. you know lunch hour at Chick-Fil-A calls for rows of hungry locals.
But on Sunday there was a similar sight, not for the number one original chicken sandwich, but for Ms. Ann.
“I’m 90 years old,” Ann Mefford, Chick-Fil- A Employee, said. ” I will be on Tuesday.”
Ms. Ann Mefford is quite the local celebrity, having dedicated eight years of her career to the Chick- Fil-A at the Odessa Town Center on 42nd Street.
Mefford said after being sent home for six weeks due to COVID-19, she was worried her usual birthday celebrations wouldn’t happen.
“She was very concerned, she started getting a little depressed because she didn’t think we would be able to do anything.” Courtney Ashley, Chick-Fil-A Marketing Director, said. “So we kind of got with some people we talked with Odessa Police, Odessa Fire Department, and we thought lets do a big fun drive by we’ll have a little part before.”
Ashley said throwing her a socially distanced party was a no brainier. The full staff and its regular customers adore Ms. Ann.
“Ms. Ann is just the sweetest, friendliest person you will ever meet,” Ashley said. ” She talks to every single person that enters out dining room, she treats them like they are the only people she has seen that day.”
While this year’s celebration seemed more distant than normal, Ms. Ann’s colleagues said simply being in each others’ presence is enough to make her smile.
“I think it’s hard for her because she’s so used to just hugs and that direct contact,” Ashley Aianda, Chick-Fil-A Employee, said. “Because she loves to talk and she loves to be around others so this is hard for her.
As for Ms. Ann she was just glad she got to celebrate her birthday with not only the co-workers she loves, but the entire community.
“I’m so glad to see them all,” Ms. Ann said. ” It makes me feel really loved.”
