ODESSA, Texas (Big 2/Fox 24) – The CDC recommends every time you step out of the house to wear a face mask and before you go out and buy one, help a medical professional and make one at home yourself. The CDC is making it easy for people to stay safe with their DIY face masks.
First, cut a clean t-shirt into a 20 x 20 inch square, then pick up your coffee filter and fold it in half cutting the surround edge off.
“This is to prevent you from coughing, sneezing, and protecting others from you spreading the disease, when you may not know that you have it. There is asymptomatic transmission so the main point of it is to help in situations where you have to be out in public and where social distancing is going to be a challenge,” said Kit Bredimus, MSN, RN, and the Director of Emergency Services at Midland Memorial Health.
After you’re done cutting the t-shirt and coffee filter you want to fold the 20 x 20 inch square of fabric in half and place the coffee filter in the middle of the folded cloth.
“One of the biggest things you need to remember is to wash your hands. Before you touch the mask, before you put it on you need to clean your hands,” said the Director.
Fold the top and bottom towards the center to cover the coffee filter. Slide the hair ties onto each end of the folded mask leaving 6 inches between the two ties and fold in both sides before putting it on.
According to Bredimus, “it goes firm against the face and it just covers the mouth it doesn’t have to cover a massive expanse just the nose and the mouth. “not touching the front of the mask and not messing with it and rearranging it a lot that’s again one of the main modes of transmission is going to be from soiled hands.”
The CDC recommends cleaning your mask every time you go out either with soap and water or putting it in the wash. Do not place the mask in the microwave to dry them instead let them air dry or put them in the dryer for a few minutes.
