Bridge Strike Bill passes Senate

AUSTIN, Texas (Big 2/Fox 24) – A bill, aimed at reducing bridge strikes in Texas, has passed in the Senate.

House Bill 799, filed by Rep. Brooks Landgraf, would hold the driver or their employer responsible for damages caused to bridges.

It has been a problem in West Texas especially. Throughout the state the Texas Department of Transportation recorded at least 82 overpass strikes in 2018 alone.

Landgraf filed the legislation early into the 2019 session.

It has already been passed in the House.

“I’m grateful to my colleagues for supporting what is clearly a common sense measure that will hold vehicle owners strictly liable for the cost of the repairs so that taxpayers aren’t stuck footing the bill,” Landgraf said in a statement after it was cleared in the House.
