MIDLAND, Texas (Big 2/Fox 24) – Mari Sykes said helping those in need has always been her calling.
“Once your eyes are open to a need it’s just really hard to look away from it, especially when you realize that the needs are so simple, basic human needs. Having friendship, having warmth, having food, and having relationships with people who care about you,” she said.
As the Executive Director of Breaking Bread she is in charge of the daily dinner at the Soup Kitchen.
“Normally, we only serve dinner time but we are just going to be open all day right now so we have a movie going and it’s just fellowship so people can come in and just get out of the weather and have a warm place to sit,” said Sykes.
With this storm she decided to take things one step further and open the kitchen during the day.
“Teen Challange, they are letting us use their van and so we took the van to the Salvation Army this morning, picked up all of our friends from there, and brought them to Breaking Bread.”
In addition to that, Breaking Bread has also raised funds to give out waterproof sleeping bags. Now, they are asking for food donations and winter coat donations.
According to the Executive Director, “We have a pretty good supply of sleeping bags going so that anyone who needs one will have one. For the winter months, we are going to need donations of winter hats, socks, underwear of all sizes, and gloves.”
Her hope is that they have enough waterproof winter gear to last through the cold season. Those that would like to donate can do so by going on their website or dropping them off in person at the soup kitchen.
