Big Spring oil spill causes concern among residents

BIG SPRING, Texas (Big 2 / Fox 24) – Residents along East Davis Road in Big Spring are concerned after an oil tank near their property sprung a major leak.

” Sunday night sometime in the middle of the night a coupling broke on one of the main lines and starting spilling oil, crude oil into my neighbors property and onto my property,” said Rory Worthan, who lives right next door to the oil tank.

The oil tank is operated by Delek U.S. Within the past day workers have been cleaning up the mess left behind, but some oil still remains. But Worthan said this leak poses another risk.

“Well this whole place out here, we don’t have another option for water,” Worthan said. ” So that’s my main concern is that if this is not cleaned up properly and cleaned up in a efficient manner then it will seep down to our water table and it will ruin our water well.”

Bobby Doe, who owns the property directly impacted by this oil spill said Delek U.S informed him that only 25 gallons of oil leaked. But looking at all the oil left behind, Doe said it is allot more than just 25 gallons.

“I think they’re leaving a couple of zeros off, ” Doe said. ” It’s closer to 2500 gallons, there’s a good 50 gallons sprayed up in the trees and on my surface there are pools or streams of a couple hundred gallons right now.”

Doe has been in contact with the Railroad Commission and attorneys to make sure the oil is cleaned up in a timely manner. Doe hopes he can have better communication with Delek U.S in the future.

” I would like to be able to call some one immediately when something like this happens so clean up can begin allot sooner.”

Big 2 News did reach out to officials from Delek U.S to find more information on this oil spill, but our calls went unanswered.
