Big Spring mom unhappy after daughter served “unacceptable” alternative lunch

News

For Stacy Fontanez, she isn’t too happy right now after what her child got for lunch during school.

“She had an issue with lunch today, we were unaware that she didn’t have enough funds in her account to buy lunch,” she said. “They took the tray out of her hands, and told her we cannot give it to you until you have funds put into your account.”

Instead Fontanez says her daughter was provided an alternative lunch, which consisted of bread, cheese and milk.

“My concern is that is not enough to feed a child, they get fed way better in prison,” said Fontanez.

After going to Facebook, Fontanez says that the principle of Goliad Elementary where the incident happened did reach out.

“She apologized to me, she said it was the food services fault, that’s what the food service said had to happen,” said Fontanez.

But now Fontanez says her and multiple other parents in Big Spring are concerned due to this issue. And while they understand it may not necessarily be the school districts fault, something needs to be done.

“There is a lot of people upset, they don’t know which direction to go to to make a difference, or help figure things out to make it better,” she said.

Big Spring ISD has since issued a statement. Here is that stament sent in three bullet points:

#1- Big Spring ISD provides an alternate lunch each and every day in all of our schools. This alternate lunch is normally a sandwich with a drink. We will never allow a child to go hungry at lunch.

#2- Big Spring ISD works extremely hard to provide a good lunch for our kids each and every day. Even if a child has an outstanding balance, we will not allow a child to not have a lunch.

#3- BSISD and Aramark work together to make this decision on lunches. Our policy is to provide a meal, even if it is the alternate meal for that particular day. Big Spring ISD had placed several automated calls to our parents letting them know that we were not allowing charges this week, and that we were wanting to balance all accounts by the end of the school year. Even with this announcement, we did not keep anyone from receiving a lunch today.
