A U.S. Army soldier was found dead after going missing in Big Bend National Park last week.
Park officials say back on May 18, they were notified that Pfc. Mamady Kaba, an active duty U.S. Army Soldier station at Fort Bliss, had gone missing.
While investigating, park officials learned that Pfc. Kaba was at Big Bend National Park with members of his unit.
Witness later told park officials that Kaba had slipped and fell in the Rio Grande River and never resurfaced, according to a release.
Kaba’s body was later located by park officials, according to a release.
“Big Bend National Park staff are saddened by this tragic loss of life, and extend their sincere condolences to the family and friends of Pfc. Kaba. This tragedy serves as an important reminder that even when water levels are low, hidden hazards exist, and swimming in the muddy waters of the Rio Grande is not recommended,” a statement from the park reads.
