We are learning more about a fatal stabbing that occurred in Midland over the weekend.

Midland Police were called to the stabbing around 1:40 a.m. Saturday morning in the 900 block of W. Montgomery.

According to a probable cause affidavit, the officers arrived at the scene and noticed a man covered in blood standing over the victim with a knife in his hand.

Officers reportedly ordered the man, later identified as Don Herrera, to get on the ground and drop the knife.

However, Herrera began stabbing himself before eventually dropping the knife and getting on the ground, according to the affidavit.

Herrera was taken to Midland Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Officers then began providing medical assistance to the victim, later identified as Francisca Sanchez.

Sanchez had had a large cut near her neck, a puncture wound to her stomach, according to the affidavit. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Once Herrera was released from the hospital he was interviewed by MPD Detectives.

Herrera told detectives that he had been called by Sanchez to pick her up from work but when he arrived, she was not there, according to the release.

Herrera reportedly spoke to a man who said she had left and could be found at a nearby home.

At the home Herrera told detectives he saw Sanchez with another man and that they began arguing and assaulting each other, according to the affidavit.

Herrera said he then pulled out the knife and stabbed Sanchez in the stomach, the affidavit reads.

He was later arrested and charged with murder. Herrera is currently being held at the Midland County Jail on a $200,000 bond.
