The Permian Basin Adult Literacy Center has been helping adults learn to read for over 30 years.
Alba Austin, PBALC Executive Director, says “if they don’t know how to read or write in English it prevents them from moving in their careers and improving their lives.”
One program teaches adults to read English and another teaches the English Language. The director of the Center says small class sizes allow these adults to feel comfortable and learn faster.
According to Austin “your just going to learn better when you have a small class room sizes and more one to one attention.”
Many parents are eager to learn so they can help their kids succeed as well. Miss Texas, Madison Fuller, is here in the Basin to support adult literacy.
“Studies show that at least 20 minutes of reading to a child is important every single night,” says Miss Texas.
A teacher herself, Fuller says she can tell when students aren’t getting help at home, an issue Austin says she sees also.
“If their adults in their lives don’t know how to read or write or dont know how to speak english then they can have low self esteem,” says the Executive Director
Fuller says it’s important that parents are given these resources to lay down the foundation for future generations. “It truly does affect the entire household. Being able to help them so that they can help their kids in the future.”
