Finding a safe way home this New Years

ODESSA. Texas (Big 2/ Fox 24)- As many are counting down to the New Year, District Attorney Bobby Bland says they also need to count on a safe ride.

“There are court fees $2,000 or more depending on the level of crime but for a first-time offender it’s still up to $2,000 and at least $5,000 for a defense attorney.”

According to TxDOT the average cost of a DWI arrest and conviction ranges from $9,000 to $24,000 so instead of taking out your keys take out your phone and call an Uber. Bland says there are also other expenses like bail, towing, insurance premiums, an interlock device that accompanies a DWI conviction. The website BACtrack these fees quickly add up to upward of $13,000.

“A conviction stays on your record forever it’s a very big problem here in Ector County,” adds the District Attorney.

OPD says while paying for rides is an added expense to a night out it’s nothing compared to the emotional burden of driving drunk.

“There’s lots of alternatives out there, you can call an Uber, a cab, call a trusted friend because it’s just not worth it to not only place your own life at risk but others as well.”
