Remembering Black History

MIDLAND, Texas – Two Black leaders in the Permian Basin believe that Black History is more than a one-month celebration.

“Black history is not just one month,” says Shirley Howard, President of the Negro Business and Professional Women’c Club of Midland.

The NBPWC of Midland is an organization that both protects and promotes the interest of African American businesses.

As the President of an organization that has the term “Negro” incorporated in its name both Shirley and Mary Helen Bowers, first vice-president of the organization says it does spark concern.

However to preserve the organizations history Howard does not plan to change the name.

“We are who we are,” said Howard.

Howard has seen community members in the Permian Basin becoming more interested in Black culture.

“Those not looking like me or my color they’re becoming more interested in what our history is and realize how valuable it is,” says Howard.

To continue to educate the community about Black history, NWBPC will hold events throughout the year.
