ODESSA, Texas (Big 2 / Fox 24) – Memorial Gardens has a new piece of art to commemorate the victims and survivors of the August 31st mass shooting.
Out of 138 artists, Jim Sanborn has been chosen by the August 31st Memorial Committee for his design called Bright Stars.
” Inside the cylinder there is a pinpoint light and the text on the cylinder that goes all the way around the cylinder,” Sanborn said. “In this case it will be composed of people’s names who were killed and the people’s names who were injured .”
Sanborn designed Bright Stars for the Odessa community for one reason in mind.
” The other thing about this piece was it can be seen from a fairly great distance and that is important to us,” Sanborn said. ” Across the lake and some distance from the sight itself.”
Sanborn hopes Bright Stars will help the West Texas community heal from that painful day one year ago.
“I just hope our piece will assist in the healing process,” Sanborn said. ” I mean I think that’s the most that anybody can hope for.”
Randy Ham, Director of Odessa Arts said Bright Stars will give residents the opportunity to remember all those impacted by August 31st.
“It gives us a place for the community to come together to grieve and heal and to celebrate life.” Ham said. “I think that the community is really going to respond to this.”
And since Memorial Gardens has always been a place to memorialize, Bright Stars will add just another piece of memory for Odessa.
“It’s really gonna give us a place to come and celebrate these different events and to always be in the shadow of what happened to us on August 31st, so we never forget.”
