Meet the “Pet of the Week” and hear safety tips for pets ahead of the Fourth of July

local news

ODESSA, Texas (Big 2/Fox 24) – Julian, the chihuahua is up for adoption at the Midland Humane Coalition and he can’t wait to find his “furever” home! The Coalition is not currently open to the public but you can find information about all of their available pets and schedule and appointment to meet any of them on their website.

Ahead of the Fourth of July, the Coalition is also offering some tips to keep pets safe during the celebrations. The fifth of July is the busiest day of the year at animal shelters across the United States because so many animals get scared by the fireworks on Independence Day.

Terra Acox says it’s important to make sure your yard is secure so your pet cannot escape but the best thing to do is keep them inside for the night. You can also desensitize your animal to the scary noises by playing them at a low volume ahead of the real celebration. Simply find a video of fireworks to play your pet leading up to the actual event so they are prepared for what’s to come.

It’s also important to make sure your pets information is up to date in case they do get lost. Double check that your phone number and address are correct on their tags and microchip. Terra says microchips are the best option because they can’t fall off. The Coalition will be holding a microchip clinic soon so stay tuned for that information!
