ODESSA, Texas (Big 2/ Fox 24) – In more than a week students in Ector County will be starting the new school year. Some students will be returning to the classroom in person this fall and ECISD is making sure everyone is safe and healthy this school year.
For the last three years Molly Hernadez has taught special education at Permian High School. As Hernandez prepares her classroom for the new school, she feels safe to have students back in person.
“Our school district is doing everything possible for us teachers and us kids,” Hernandez said. “We have kids, I mean a few of them have messaged me with concerns, And I just reassure them that if I’m coming back then you’re gonna be fine because if I felt unsafe, I wouldn’t be here.”
While Hernandez was at first concerned of contracting COVID-19 during the school year, she has full confidence ECISD is keeping staff and students healthy.
” I think they are going above and beyond,” Hernandez said. “And of course there is always room for improvement but I think they are constantly seeking out to find that.”
In order to keep to everyone safe the district has partnered with Germ Blast, a sanitation company from Lubbock, to clean all of their campuses. Christy Haynes, Germ Blast Vice President, said their teams are not only cleaning classrooms, but athletic equipment and facilities as well.
“They wipe down all of the environments, so all of the touch points, that’s a labor intensive process. So they go in and wiping down with microfiber. Haynes said. “And then we come in with electric static sprayers and spray E-P-A approved hospital disinfectant. It also list in, meaning it’s effective against corona virus.”
Cortney Smith, ECISD Operation Director, said while they have full confidence in their own custodial staff , but they want to take this extra step to ensure everyone is safe.
“This isn’t just a one time thing where they’re coming in before school, getting the buildings ready for our kids and staff,” Smith said. “They’re gonna come back every 90 days and complete their process.”
And to parents who may still be hesitant in sending their kids back to school this fall, ECISD said their children will be safe.
“Feel comfortable sending your kids to a clean and safe environment,” Smith said. “Health is of the number one priority of the district right now and we’re doing everything we can to assure that to the public, our staff members and most importantly our students at ECISD.”
The district said Germ Blast will also be sanitizing all of their school buses. Germ Blast will also be providing all schools with posters that will advise students on how to properly social distance and to always wash their hands.
