ODESSA, Texas (Big 2/Fox 24) – Ector County Independent School District wants to hear from you. The district is holding eight public meetings this Spring to hear from residents on what they believe the students need.
According to Co-chair of Facilities Review Committee, Chris Cole, the committee was created in November of 2019 after several assessments were done on future student projections. ECISD gained 1,600 new students just within the last year.
“So what we’re seeing is continued growth,” said Muri. “Steady growth over the next decade.”
Its primary role is to assess the facility needs of the students, review all possible options, and present a five year plan to the school board this May. After the presentation, the Board of Trustees will decide what to do next.
“You know, our job is really just to listen to what everybody is saying. What do they feel like the most pressing needs are? What are the ideas that they have in respect to the overall facilities?”
Anese Forsyth is a 2nd grade teacher at Reagan Academic Magnet. She is also a mother to former ECISD students. She says she has seen firsthand how antiquated facilities can impact student learning.
“I think about my own kids who went from elementary schools to middle schools to junior high and to high schools, and how the crowded spaces really stressed them out. And also how it didn’t provide an environment where they could learn their best and be their best.”
According to a 2017 assessment, the district was facing 605 million dollars in renovation needs. Half of ECISD’s campuses are 60 years or older with an average age of 45. So will this mean a new school facilities bond?
“If our community says to us as a school district that we support a bond then certainly.”
