ODESSA. Texas (Big 2 / Fox 24) – A severe drop in temperatures is causing some dangerous road conditions in the Permian Basin. Odessa Police is urging all drivers to be extremely careful when they go out on the roads these next few days.
“We’re not concerned about the weather, we’re concerned about the roads it’s what we have to respond to,” said Officer Steve Leseuer with the Odessa Police Department.
While these extremely cold temperatures are expected to bring ice and sleet to our roadways, Odessa Police said it’s best not to travel. But for those who have to, police want drivers to make sure they pre-heat their cars the right way.
” If the ignition is left in the key with the vehicle left unattended it’s illegal,” Leseuer said. ” If you have an auto start or some sort remote device, it’s perfectly legal to warm up you vehicle and leave it unattended.”
Another thing drivers should look out for is low tire pressure resulting from freezing temperatures.
“Lower tire pressure equal less traction, ” said Justin Willams, Service Manager at Midas. “If you have less traction on the road, you have less control and you are not as stable as you would be on a properly inflated tire.”
And while out on the icy roads the most important thing to do according to TxDOT, is to slow down and give yourself more distance between other cars.
“Never slam you breaks on and if you ever find yourself in a skid or a flat,” said Gene Powell with TxDOT Odessa. “Take your foot off the gas, and steer your car where you want it to go.”
But most importantly, Odessa police are encouraging drivers to use extra precautions to keep each other safe.
“It’s always better to be safe than sorry,” Leseuer said. “If you can use an alternative route do it because it’s just not worth it.”
