ODESSA, Texas (YourBasin) – Students and staff at Permian High School celebrated a very special birthday today. Arlo, the school’s therapy dog, turned 4-years-old today. Arlo’s full-time job is to relieve anxiety and comfort students around the campus.

Dr. Tina Caro, from Student Assistant Services, says Arlo has had a significant impact on mental health at the school.

“The last year and a half, we have had thirty students come in and say because of Arlo, they have done no harm to themselves. It has been such a wonderful thing to see kids walk into the school, and they smile when they come in,” said Caro.

Arlo’s story began a little over a year ago. Arlo cost around $3,000 and the training to become a therapy dog, came with a price tag of about $15,000. However, ECISD did not have to pay for any of it.  The district says everything was donated to the high school by people in the community.
