Women in the Field

ODESSA, Texas (Local 2 News) - Kayla Lewis has worked within multiple oil companies as a sales manager for four years. She joined after some friends invited her onboard. In those four years since, she's noticed a couple changes. "I think since the time I started it's been a lot of sales women. Still guys, but I think in the last year or so, you see a lot more women," says Lewis.

News like this music to the ears of Katie Mehnert, founder of Pink Petro which encourages women to get involved in the energy industry. "One of the visions I had is to keep women connected, keep women engaged and really build on the next generation of talent," says Mehnert.

Mehnert's efforts are needed. Oil and gas remains one of the most male dominated industries, even more so then tech. As of 2015 women only make up 26.7% of Linkedin profiles related to oil and gas. According to Catalyst, of the top 1,000 energy companies, only 6% of CEOs are women. this an issue Menhert wants to bring to life through Pink Petro. "Why isn't energy getting the attention of tech, finance, media, healthcare get. It's quiet frankly, the industry doesn't talk enough about what we do," says Mehnert.

Strides are being made. according to Fortune companies such as GE have seen a 6% growth in senior level positions since 2013 while Conoco Phillips as seen 23% of their recently hired graduate engineers as women. Mehnert hopes this carries on to future generations.

Annette Dozier moved to Midland eight years ago. Admitting she didn't even know what a pump jack was at first.. Things have changed as she climbs the ladder. "Once you get into the oil and gas industry you realize how multifaceted it really is. Theres so many different facets to it," says Dozier.

Now an executive assistant to the Aislar companies, she has advice for women wanting to take that next step. "Dedication, time commitment, be willing to do the things nobody else will, and get to know people," says Dozier.
