September is Hunger Action Month

Organizations from Across the Country Focusing on Those in Need of Food

ODESSA, Texas (Local 2/Fox 24) - As school starts and cold weather begins to creep around the corner, the month of September is set aside to focus on those who are facing hunger across the country.

"Hunger action month is actually a nation-wide campaign to bring awareness of hunger in our different communities," says Craig Stoker, a spokesman for the West Texas Food Bank.

Places like the West Texas Food Bank have different activities throughout the month to help those in need. They say that there is no better time than now to focus on those who need food.

"September is always a great time to think about it, you've got kids going back to school," says Stoker. "So it's always just a great time to talk about hunger because it never stops."

This September is different, with Southeast Texas being ravaged by Hurricane Harvey, the work load is heavier than ever before.

"During Harvey six food banks were knocked offline, and that just hadn't happened before in the food banks system," says Stoker. "So it's been a time of learning and challenges, but this is what we do every day."

While this month may be devoted to those with empty stomach, places like the West Texas Food Bank emphasize that this is something that should be focused on year-round.

"The issue of hunger is all around us, and it's something that we just don't need to lose sight of."
