Pecos High School Has Found Their New Principal

Will officially be full time principal in February

PECOS, Texas (Local 2/FOX 24) - The Pecos High School Athletics Director and head football coach is officially the new principal.

Chris Henson says he had been talking to family about the position since the Spring.

With Henson's son, Pecos' four year starting quarterback Bubba Henson, heading to college, Henson says he had to prioritize.

"Our son is moving on to college, going to play ball, so we want to be able to kind of spend time with him in college playing football," said Henson.

With Henson coaching football for 24 years total and 12 of those years at Pecos, Henson says it's not an easy decision.

"It's tough moving out of it, we know better things are ahead of us. So we've done our hard work and put our work in, so it's definitely time to start the new chapter in our lives," said Henson.

In those 12 years of coaching Pecos, Henson has left quite the legacy.

"We made the playoffs 7 times in a row. That's the most in the history of the Pecos Eagles, and we hope the next athletic director can come in here and just build on what we've done and make it even great," said Henson.

As the new principal of Pecos, Henson plans to improve test scores.

"We face challenges, we come in to improve and work on everyday, and that's what we're going to do is bring in a work ethic right here into the hallways, into our students, and into our classrooms," said Henson.

Even though Henson won't be coaching, Henson says he'll still be cheering from the sidelines.

"You know, in my heart, I've been a coach my whole life. That's all I've ever wanted to do. For 24 years, I've raced out of bed every morning and ran to the field house. You know I taught 24 years of coaching, and I don't feel like I've worked one day in my life. I feel like I've cheated the system," said Henson.

Henson says he won't officially be the full-time Pecos High School principal until February and adds that he'll continue to be the interim Athletics Director, until they find a replacement.
