Mother Accused of Leaving Children in Trash Filled Home

ODESSA, Texas (Local 2/Fox 24) - One woman is facing four counts of abandoning or endangering a child after she reportedly left her children in a trash filled home back on Feb. 4.

Odessa police say they were called to the 900 block of Roxanna about an urgent check welfare.

When officers arrived at the home, they found a 9-year-old, an 8-year-old, a 6-year-old and a 5-year-old inside of the house, according to the release.

While inside the home, police say trash and old food was scattered throughout along with utensils, knives and drug paraphernalia.

In the probable cause affidavit, officers describe the home in "deplorable conditions."

Officers then spoke to the mother, later identified as Cristal Danielle Mendez, on the phone and told her to come back to the home, to which she agreed, according to the release.

However, police say Mendez never arrived at the home and the children were released to Child Protective Services.

She was later arrested and charged with four counts of abandoning or endangering a child, a second-degree-felony.
