Marfa City Council to End Sheriff Agreement

Will establish Marfa Police Department

MARFA, Texas (Local 2/FOX24) -

City Council voting in favor of ending their agreement with the Presidio County Sheriff's Office.

Our crews at the meeting tell us council members voted 3-2 to end the agreement.

The city will now look to establish their own police department.

The city attorney, Teresa Todd, says the the Sheriff's Office was not present for 7 interviews done by the Children's Advocacy Center of the Big Bend according to an open records request she obtained.

"It seemed like it was time to make a change and the council made the right decision," Todd said.

On the other hand, Presidio County Sheriff Danny Dominguez says it was an unwarranted attack on him.

"It's a witchhunt. I want to look them up and bring them before city council and prove them wrong," said Dominguez.

We're told the city still has a chance to present new terms to the Sheriff but if he doesn't accept, then the city will have to approve a budget amendment to begin hiring police officers.
