Low Temperatures Equal Less Crime on New Year's Eve Weekend

OPD had their hands full with car crashes

ODESSA, Texas (Local 2 / FOX 24) - The Odessa Police Department had their hands full New Year's Eve weekend and it wasn't because of crime.

According to Corporal Steve LeSueur, New Year's Eve is one of the busiest holidays for law enforcement.

LeSueur says there tends to be an increase in crime and calls to the police station during this holiday.

However, crime numbers were down compared to other years, and LeSueur credits below freezing temperatures for having a major part in that decline.

"I think the weather did definitely play a role this year because obviously there weren't as many people outside due to the extreme cold conditions," said LeSueur.

Between December 29th and January 2nd, LeSueur says the worst crime to happen was an armed robbery at an Odessa smokers outlet on Friday night.

"We really didn't have anything too crazy, anything too serious happen," said LeSueur.

Where OPD saw a decline in crime, mother nature responded with poor road conditions.

"Since the water lines broke, water went down the roads and ice immediately began to form and that led to several crashes we responded to," said LeSueur.

A recent data release from OPD reveals that between December 29th and January 2nd the department responded to a total of 91 car related calls, 63 of those being car crashes.

Other parts of the release show there were 55 firework calls, 28 shots fired calls, and 59 disturbance reports.

While LeSueur wasn't able to give us data from previous years, he says its clear there was a decline in criminal activity this time around.

LeSueur warns residents to drive defensively, because freezing temperatures are expected to stick around until Wednesday afternoon.
