La Kiva Re-Opens For First Time Since Owner's Murder; Now Under New Management

TERLINGUA, TX (Local Big 2 News) -- - It's been more than a year since the beat-to-death murder of La Kiva Restaurant Owner Glenn Felts in Terlingua. Monday night, under new management, the bar re-opened for the first time since then.

La Kiva is a favorite spot among locals in Terlingua, and new Owner John Holroyd said the restaurant's future looked bleak.

"Six months went by and it didn't look as though La Kiva was going to survive,” Holroyd said. “It appeared, or at least many people thought, that La Kiva was going to close down forever."

After coming to La Kiva for more than 30 years, Holroyd said he had to save the restaurant from going under.

"I've been coming here since 1982 and I just couldn't let that happen,” Holroyd said. “So as a result of that, I made an offer."

His offer was eventually picked, and thus, La Kiva is open again for people in Terlingua. Holroyd said Felts had a distinct first impression, but the community grew to love him.

"I met Glenn,” Holroyd said. “I remember the first time he turned up here. Pretty much the response of all the locals was, who the hell is this snot-nozed kid."

It pleased Holroyd's heart to see a huge crowd on opening night.

"A very warm feeling,” Holroyd said. “It's been just great. All the changes we've made have been well accepted. People seem to approve of what we've done."

Holroyd plans to have a grand opening at a later date, when the restaurant is back to being fully operational. The killing of Felts still remains unsolved.
