The Department of Public Safety confirms one is dead and seven are injured after a bus crash late Friday night involving an Iraan ISD bus carrying school cheerleaders.

In a news release, DPS said a truck tractor towing a semi-trailer was traveling eastbound on I20 behind a black passenger car.

DPS says the black car slammed on its breaks causing the 18-wheeler to swerve past the center median into westbound traffic, striking the school bus.

52 year old Elizabeth Pope was pronounced dead at Scenic Mountain Medical Center Friday night.

6 other teenagers and the school bus driver were transported to SMMC with injuries.

DPS tells Local 2 they still don't know exactly what caused the crash initially, but they believe a witness may know more.

IMPORTANT: Authorities say there was a black Dodge Challenger at the scene who later left that could have valuable information leading to the cause of the crash. They ask anyone that knows the driver of the black Dodge Challenger that may have been a witness to the crash to come forward in hopes of revealing important information.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Sergeant Oscar Villarreal with the Department of public safety by phone at 432-498-2714, or by email at Oscar.Villarreal@dps.texas.gov
