Former Midland Mayor to Make Senate Run

MIDLAND, Texas (Local 2/Fox 24) - The former mayor of Midland is eyeing the Texas Senate. 

Mike Canon announced Friday that he will run for the District 31 Senate seat in Texas. 

The seat is currently held by Kel Seliger (R-Amarillo). 

“Senate District 31 is the most conservative Senate district in the state of Texas. The citizens of our district deserve a state senator that shares their conservative values," Canon said in a statement. "In the Senate, I will fight to secure the border, lower property taxes, protect unborn life, preserve the Second Amendment, and strive to reduce the size of our state’s government."

Canon is a the former Mayor of Midland and also served on the city council. 

Canon is also the co-founder of Downtown Midland Inc., and has also served at vice chair of the Vision 2000 Task Force on Economic Development, the Midland Chamber of Commerce, and a director of the YMCA. 

"Despite being outspent more than 2-1, our campaign nearly unseated the incumbent in 2014," said Canon. “I look forward to visiting with the citizens in all 37 counties in the district to build a grassroots movement behind our campaign and deliver conservative leadership to the citizens of Texas Senate District 31."
