Campus Carry Begins At Community Colleges on Tuesday

Odessa College students and faculty are optimistic

ODESSA, Texas (Local 2/FOX 24) - Campus carry officially went into effect statewide for community colleges on August 1st, and many students and faculty are optimistic.

Melissa Bagget, a former student and now employee for Odessa College, says she was a bit nervous at first about the bill.

"They educated us on what it is and things like that, and so I felt a lot more comfortable with it. It definitely changed my view of it," said Bagget.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 11, allowing concealed campus carry, on June 2015.

But gun-holders will still be restricted to when and where they can carry their firearms.

Ken Zartener is the Executive Director of Administration and Human Resources for Odessa, and he says they've fine-tuned their policies of where concealed firearms may be allowed.

"We have the option to have exclusionary areas for board meetings, any disciplinary type hearings, athletic events etc. or any special event that may come on campus where our administration feels like it should be an exclusionary area," said Zartener.

Odessa College student David Martinez isn't worried because he knows those who carry concealed hand guns are licensed and have had background checks.

"To me it's more of an out of sight out of mind situation. Cause I don't want to see a rifle on someone's back. I'd rather just not know that it's there and them not even tell me that they have it," said Martinez.

Martinez says he believes campus carry will add another safety measure.

"It does make me feel a little more safe knowing that just in case, lord forbid, something does happen, there are students who will probably be able to defend themselves and maybe others," said Martinez.
