Busted pipes could cause icy roads in Odessa

City says it could last for days

ODESSA, Texas (Local 2/Fox 24) - While Christmas and New Years have passed, unfortunately the cold decided to stay. As a result, pipes all around the Permian Basin are breaking.

"We have seven crews working around the clock responding to and working diligently around these breaks," says Andrea Goodson, Odessa's public information coordinator.

Areas all around cities like Odessa, Midland and Big Spring are suffering from this issue. And at night, what is currently water on the roads will turn into ice.

"People come flying down this street a lot, and so at night you are not going to be able to see it." says Jodi Bates, a resident of Odessa.

A busted pipe may come in the form of a crack spewing water on the road. However, that tiny crack can leak into the sides of the road and create large puddles elsewhere.

"It's very dangerous because a vehicle can come and slide into our house when it is frozen," says Mike Ibarra, a homeowner who's house is situated near a burst pipe.

As the sun goes down, frozen roads and black ice become a problem. So Odessa city officials say to slow down and be cautious of your surroundings.

"Drive slow, you don't know if there are water bane breaks occurring. If you see utility crews working that's a tell-tale sign," says Goodson.

City officials say that with sudden warmth in the near future, the expansion of the pipes could lead to more breakage.
