Big Spring Debuts First Oxygen Chamber

Scenic Mountain Medical Center gets a renovated Wound Care Center

BIG SPRING, Texas (Local 2/Fox 24) - Big Spring's Scenic Mountain Medical Center gets a renovated Wound Care Center with equipment to change the way diabetic patients get treatment.

Local 2's Lupe Zapata brings us a first look at the centers new hyperbaric system that enhances healing by breathing in 100 percent oxygen in a total body chamber.

"We saw that we had a lot of diabetics, and a lot of patients with high blood pressure which makes a perfect combination for the chronic ulcers that are difficult to heal." said the hospitals CEO Emma Krabill.

The two chambers costing one-hundred and sixty thousand dollars  will give patients care never before

Before now patients would have to travel to midland or surrounding bigger City's to receive the special treatment to mend an unhealing wound to prevent amputation.

"The impact that it has on that patient over the course of their life results more expense to the system, the patient, their family members so definitely the treatments outweigh that cost."

The hospital's Wound Care Center plans to be operating the new oxygen chamber's within the next couple of weeks.
