BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK, Texas(KMID/KPEJ) - National Park Rangers have seized more than 500 artifacts believed to have been smuggled through Big Bend National Park in April 2016, according to a release from the National Park Service.

NPS officials investigated Andrew Kowalik of Rockport for smuggling the artifacts through the park from Mexican protected lands.

On Feb. 13, 2017, Kowalik was prosecuted in federal court and was sentenced to five years of supervised release/home confinement. He is not allowed to leave his home after sundown, leave his home county, or visit any national park area.  He was also fined $10,000 and ordered to forfeit the stolen artifacts.

Kowalik was caught in a cooperative investigation with the help of Homeland Security and the U.S. Coast Guard.
